This sculpture is a bit stylized, which is somewhat of a departure from my usual realistic style. Throughout most of the year the adult male Long-tailed Widowbird is easy to overlook, a medium-sized tawny bird with black streaks. But during the breeding season, males become almost entirely black with bright red and buff shoulders and long, wide tail feathers that can measure two feet long. While attempting to attract a mate, the male flies slowly, a few feet above his nesting ground, with slow jerky wing beats, with tail expanded and drooping down. Females weave nests in the high grass within the males' territory. Long-tailed Widowbirds inhabit highlands of eastern and southern Africa.
