If you come upon a Cape Buffalo unaware chances are you will not survive the encounter. They are considered one of the "big five" of Africa's most dangerous animals. They are grumpy and unpredictable, earning them the name Black Death, having killed more big game hunters than any other species. The massive four-foot wide horns can catapult a full size lion in the air like a rag doll. Inspired by these scrappy creatures, I wanted to do a painting to make the viewer feel like they have just come face to face with a pathfinder, or leader of the herd. At a speed of 56km or 35 miles per hour, humans are no match to outrun them. Although the numbers of Cape Buffalo are not as endangered as some species, they face an opponent that they cannot survive. As Africa's forests, rivers, and land continue to disappear, it is clear that the future of all wildlife living there is threatened.
