The magpie and the bison have long been historically associated, with the magpies landing on the large animals to help eliminate some of the bothersome ticks and insects ever present on their shaggy brethren. They also frequently followed hunting parties of the Plains Indians and fed on the leftovers from the bison kills. This somewhat stylized depiction pays homage to the natural importance of symbiotic relationships.
