What was once a glaciated summit is now home to these Golden Mantled Ground Squirrels. It’s impressive that these mammals are able to live in this environment. Lichen are also here and can live to be thousands of years old.
As I painted this I thought about the water cycle. Glaciers are feeding rivers that end up in the ocean, and then return as rain and snow. Once these glaciers are gone that cycle will be affected. These ground squirrels don’t seem to be concerned with any of this, and are happy to enjoy the view from their mountain home.
