Canadian Lynx probably developed from a common ancestor of the Bobcat (Lynx rufus), which initially emerged from Africa into Eurasia. It arose as a result of separate invasions of North America by an ancestor cat from Asia across the land bridge of Berengia 200 000 years ago. Lynx hunt snowshoe hare, consume ruffed grouse, red squirrels, ungulate carrion, and voles. Canadian Lynx are essentially solitary and are considered threatened since March 2000. Eastern White Pine is the monarch of the northeastern conifers. At the beginning of the North American colonization, pine trees of more than 50 meters high and more than 1 meter in diameter were common. White Pine has 5 needles inserted into a spindle. It was heavily harvested in Quebec and Ontario for the masts of English battleships.
