This loon, lifting off the water at sunrise, exemplifies my fascination with the symbiotic relationship between water and the animals it supports, both ever changing and never the same. Loons are a common sight in unpolluted Lakes throughout the northern climes. Although they are not currently under threat from a conservation standpoint, their haunting calls and spectacular summer plumage would be a serious loss should that scenario change. They are superbly designed to dive, hunt small fish, and get airborne. Their legs are positioned at the end of their torso making them ungainly on land. In fact they only go on land for the short duration of their nesting. They summer in lakes and winter in the ocean.
