As a resident of the U.S. southwest, I have the opportunity to see a wide variety of bird life found in the Sonoran Desert. As part of a rich ecosystem, the desert supports a number of birds of prey, my favorite being Cooper's Hawks and Barn Owls. The owl is of particular interest, mostly due to the bird's white heart-shaped face, while marked by rusty tan to dark brown, gray, and white-spotted plumage. While the owl faces human encroachment of its habitat, as well as the danger of feeding on pesticide-poisoned prey, the Barn Owl remains the most widespread land bird species in the world, occurring in every continent except Antarctica.
