This turkey vulture (Catharses Aura, Latin meaning for “cleaning breeze”) ruffling its feathers as it perches on a favorite snag is part of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum’s fun and educational exhibit called Vulture Culture. Vultures may not be thought of as fun or beautiful, but they are important to our ecosystem. Vultures are great recyclers, soaring on thermals with six feet of wings in the desert skies, they look and smell for carrion (dead animals.) Scavenging seems somewhat gruesome but it helps tidy up the environment. Without scavengers our world would not look or smell nearly as clean, hence “cleaning breeze.”
