I never have enough time to sketch, never so true as when I was facing this 400 pound Silverback in the bamboo forest of Virunga. I could have spent days and not done enough - but the memories are etched forever in my mind. The time we spent staring at each other was some of the best time in my life, drawing or not. I chose the cool hues to help convey the serenity I think we both felt.
This piece is one of several using a new material- cold wax- mixed with transparent pigment, applied to the surface, and then scored through using my fingers to show bits of what's underneath. The drawn lines are always the "bones" of any art that I make, and I always want them to be seen in the final.
