More often than not you hear these yellow-tailed black cockatoos flying from some distance well before you see them. They have a very wild haunting cry and are typically seen on the East Coast of Australia amongst the heathland that comprises these Banksia Serrata. Like many cockatoos they tear apart the bark of many species to get at the grubs that bore beneath. Painting this species is a real challenge and so having good reference is essential. This pair along with about twenty others drop in to see me most days and do a fly by over the bird feeder in front of my studio.
