After 19 trips to Africa, I’ve had quite a few opportunities to get up close and personal with elephants. It is always stimulating, inspiring, and occasionally, nerve-wracking when a big bull turns and gives me a warning look or shake of his head. It doesn’t happen often as park elephants see so many people they don’t get upset normally. The most serious threats I’ve received have come from the cows. When they put their head down and charge they mean business. Either way, a confrontation with one of these huge pachyderms is a memory that lasts a long time.
