After the devastating bush fires in Australia this past summer, my heart was breaking. The thought of the loss of wildlife and also the loss of habitat for the survivors was beyond comprehension. Sadly koalas were victims in these bush fires and this news was broadcast around the world. I felt compelled to paint something to lift our spirits instead of focusing on the sadness. A few years ago, while visiting a local nature reserve I was fortunate to witness and photograph a lorikeet play with a sleeping mother koala, by jumping on top of its head and dancing around. The koala didn't seem to care at all! It was such a memorable experience, and it still brings a smile to my face. This encounter was my inspiration for this painting.
