I have been lucky to spend quite a bit of time on Gasparilla Island, on Florida's Gulf Coast and have been inspired by, among other things, the way certain man-made relics have become such fertile habitats for all kinds of wildlife. This old railroad trestle, long out of service, provides such a habitat for many species, I have spent many hours observing, birds of all sorts, fish, manatees, dolphins and turtles. The water is clear and often the birds will sit atop the old trestle and wait for fish and dive in or walk in the shallow waters. At midday, this egret has the place to himself, the sun shines through the calm water making it all the more inviting.
