Licuala Rainforest near Mission Beach is an ecological gem in the Wet Tropics of Northern Queensland. Home to both rare flora and fauna, it is one of the last sites to see both the endangered Southern Cassowaries and the spectacular Fan Palms.
I watched this male Cassowary guide his young offspring through the beautiful light of a tropical sunrise filtering through the forest canopy from a very safe distance. Standing up to 2m tall, these birds, if roused, can strike with immensely powerful kicks, killing humans with a single blow.
