Artist Statement

It is the male of this species native to Spain, North Africa and western/central Asia which has the distinctive blue beak. Both male and female have a distinctive long upright cocked tail. The population is challenged by habitat loss, hunting and interbreeding with the Ruddy Duck. Some conservation efforts are directed at eradicating the Ruddy Duck, an introduced species.
