Artist Statement

This painting is of the Umbrella Cockatoo, also known as the White Cockatoo. This medium-sized bird is a native of tropical rainforests on islands of Indonesia. Here I have chosen to depict him enjoying one of his favorite foods – a papaya. In their natural habitat these cockatoos eat fruits, nuts, seeds, large insects, etc. I was surprised to learn that they also eat small lizards, such as skinks! This beautiful bird is considered endangered due to population decline in the wild because of habitat loss and other factors.
