Gyps africanus by Alison Nicholls(8 in. x 8 in. | Acrylic | ID#3857)
Family: ACCIPITRIDAE | Conservation Status: Critically Endangered | Population Trend: decreasing
Vulture numbers are dropping all over Africa as they fall victim to the indiscriminate practice of poisoning carcasses to kill large predators like lions and hyenas. White-backed Vultures are the species I see most frequently on my sketching safaris in southern Africa and their distinctive silhouette makes them a favorite of mine. This painting was based on watercolor sketches created in Botswana.
