Artist Statement

There are currently only 22 breeding localities (in south-central China) and 12 wintering localities (in Thailand and south-west Cambodia) for the Silver Oriole. The world population is estimated at 1500-3800 individuals (HBW Alive), with the main threats being habitat loss (including illegal logging) , habitat fragmentation and degradation. The species is still relatively poorly known. Like most orioles this is a very attractive bird and I wanted it to stand out against the background, especially when it is in situ as part of the Silent Skies mural. Consequently I have kept the background fairly loose, while still retaining a strong design element in the form of a predominantly Z-shaped composition.
