Artist Statement

The Santa Marta Parakeet inhabits humid mountain forests of northern Colombia, an area known as the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The small green parakeet can be found flying quickly along, above or below the forest canopy. The parakeet nests in natural tree cavities and feeds on a variety of fruits and seeds. With habitat loss from agricultural development, logging, and human encroachment, native vegetation has shrunk to 15 percent of the birds original habitat. Local control over remaining habitat and lack of conservation efforts may be harmful to the long term viability of this species.
