Pink Pigeon

Nesoenas mayeri by Kathy Haycock(8 in. x 8 in. | oil on canvas | ID#3982)
Family: COLUMBIDAE | Conservation Status: Endangered | Population Trend: decreasing
Artist Statement
Native to the island of Mauritus, the pink pigeon was on the brink of extinction with a population of only 10 in 1991. Efforts by the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Fund and WMF have increased the population in captive breeding and it was downgraded from Critically Endangered to Endangered in 2000. Again, habitat loss is the major factor in its decline with only 2% of native forest remaining in Mauritus. With introduced predators and spread of diseases at forest feeding stations the species is very much at risk of further decline.
