Phytotoma raimondii by Kathy Kleinsteiber(8 in. x 8 in. | Acrylic on Canvas | ID#4055)
Family: COTINGIDAE | Conservation Status: Endangered | Population Trend: decreasing
The Peruvian Plantcutter lives in shrubs and desert thickets in coastal northern Peru. Its range has become very small and severely fragmented due to conversion of land to agriculture. It is a distinctive bird with a recognizable call and it perches conspicuously so it is not difficult to observe. It has been named an emblematic species in some areas and is being used to create awareness of conservation, so perhaps there is hope for its future.
