Artist Statement

The Meller's Duck is a species of the dabbling duck genus Anas. It is endemic to eastern Madagascar. Meller’s ducks inhabit freshwater lakes, rivers, streams and marshlands, often in forested areas, up to an elevation of 2,000 meters (6500 feet). Lake Alaotra, Madagascar’s largest lake, is believed to be one of the most important sites for this endangered bird. They look similar to a Mallard hen, but have a blueish grey bill which is slightly longer than most ducks and orange-brown feet. They are dark brown with pale brown highlights on their feathers, and have a grey underside. The only "color" is their green wing patch visible when the birds are in flight.
