Artist Statement

The Mallee Emu-wren [Stipiturus mallee Maluridae], is a diminutive bird confined to the Murray Mallee region of South Australia and Victoria. The numbers have shrunk drastically after bushfires destroyed much of their habitat in this region. There is a concerted conservation effort underway to save the species which could be even closer to extinction in the event of future bush fires. Wrens are the sweetest little birds and I am lucky to have a cousin of the Mallee Emu-wren visit my garden, called a Splendid Fairy - wren. They are extremely difficult to photograph as they dart rapidly from place to place but are one of my favourite birds to paint!
