Artist Statement

The Makira moorhen, is endemic to the Solomon Islands. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It is threatened by habitat loss. Being Critically Endangered and flightless, it's vulnerable to reproductive pressure, predators, and substantial habitat loss due to humans and now sea level rise and climate change. I have painted all my submissions for this unprecedented mural with scratches and lost edges to represent it's status as a very real and at the same time disappearing species.
