Artist Statement

The Chatham Island Taiko is a very rare seabird that nests only in the dense forests of Chatham Island, New Zealand. It is threatened by mammals such as cats, rats and feral pigs which were all introduced to the island. I painted this as a tribute to my nephew, Malcolm Weiland, who left this world far too soon. A rare New Zealand seabird… flying off into the Great Unknown…
