Artist Statement
I chose to portray the Malagasy Pond heron in breeding plumage, white with long crest and blue bill. In non breeding plumage its crest is brown and its body is streaked with brown. Habitat includes small grassy marshes, lakes, ponds streams and rice fields in Madagascar and Seychelles. They feed on fish, insects and small vertebrates and an occasional small reptile .When not breeding they have been found in east and central Africa. The pond heron's main threat is habitat loss, clearing and draining of wetlands to be converted to rice fields, as well as over harvesting of their eggs. Competition with the Squaco heron has also contributed to their decline in numbers.
