Laysan Duck, Laysan Teal
Anas laysanensis by Priscilla Baldwin(8 in. x 8 in. | scratchboard and ink | ID#3637)
Family: ANATIDAE | Conservation Status: Critically Endangered | Population Trend: increasing
The Laysan Duck is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, today living mainly on Laysan Island. Living in an area without predators the birds have evolved to escapee harm by either freezing or running rather than flying. The introduction of rabbits brought the duck close to extinction. There were only twelve ducks left when steps were taken to ensure their future. Currently the Laysan Duck has the most restricted range of any bird in the world.
