Gunnison Grouse , Gunnison Sage Grouse, Gunnison Grouse, Gunnison Sage-Grouse
Centrocercus minimus by Anne Peyton(8 in. x 8 in. | Acrylic | ID#3706)
Family: PHASIANIDAE | Conservation Status: Endangered | Population Trend: decreasing
Found only in a small area of southwestern Colorado and southeastern Utah, the Gunnison Sage-Grouse was not recognized as a distinct species until 2000. Species numbers have been in decline for years and the grouse became a federally threatened species in 2014 and is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Habitat change, encroachment and a narrow distribution - 85 percent of the estimated 4,600 total birds are in a single breeding area - are the primary areas of concern.
