Artist Statement
The Cryptic Treehunter was only recently discovered. It lives in an area of northeastern Brazil where the forest is rapidly declining. It is critically endangered with a population of perhaps fewer than ten individuals. In English, it is called “cryptic” because it is so hard to find, but in Portuguese, its name translates to “screamer” for its loud screeching call. Sadly, this bird’s screaming call has not been heard for a while.
