Artist Statement

It is with great appreciation for the poignancy of the Silent Skies Mural that I have chosen the critically endangered Cebu Flowerpecker. This small palm sized bird is endemic or restricted to the island of Cebu in the Philippines where counts approximate only 85-105 remaining. Deforestation of the rainforest is the largest threat to the Cebu Flowerpecker. Conservation efforts are being made to establish corridors to bridge the remaining isolated pockets of intact habit . The Cebu Flowerpecker was previously declared extinct but rediscovered in 1992. Given this second chance, the conservation plan has great incentive to succeed.
