Artist Statement

Penguins are not a bird typically associated with Africa, but I enjoyed a great afternoon sketching these African penguins (formerly known as Jackass penguins) as they waddled up Boulders Beach in South Africa. Their comical movements on land are contrasted with their sleek, fast and incredibly agile abilities in the water. My watercolor sketches from that day formed the basis of this acrylic painting.
