Pat Riggs

AFC Conservation Artist of the Month for March, 2021

For many years Pat Riggs has donated paintings to a wildlife refuge in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, called Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge .  A series of portraits of their rescued animals included 11 scratchboard pieces of art.  They have rescued over 100 tigers and other big cats that were abandoned, abused, or needed a new home.  Some of the cutting edge technology on tigers have come from their devoted zoologists on how to care for wild tigers in captivity.

As Pat puts it, "I paint what I love.  I have always loved animals and nature. I am deeply concerned about the preservation of our animals and nature. It grieves me to see so many habitats and animals going extinct.  I want to use my art to show the world my love for what God has created and to try and save it. I am currently working on art to raise money for Saving the Survivors.  It was founded in 2012 by Dr Johan Marais to attend to injured, endangered, wildife that have fallen victim to poaching or traumatic incidents. "

The organization places most of efforts have been directed at rhino due to the vicious attacks that many of them have fallen victim to.  They are supported by the South African Veterinarian Association and Ford Motor Company.  Dr Marais is leading the world in studies on how to treat Rhinos that have had their faces cut off for their horns.

Pat Riggs has been painting since 1967 when she did her first oil painting at 7 years old. She has continued painting for over 50 years doing various media and subjects including large murals. Over 97 large scenes and murals were completed in her career during the 1990's. Working as a computer graphic designer and commercial artist, she went full time as an artist of wildlife and animals in 2015. She works from a studio/gallery located in Muldrow, Oklahoma since 1989. In recent years she has used her art to support wildlife conservation efforts out of concern for endangered species.
