Steven Lingham

AFC Conservation Artist of the Month for January, 2010

Steven Lingham is an award winning self-taught artist born in Derby, England in 1973, but has spent the majority of his life living in Yorkshire. He has a long history of supporting nature.
In 2008 Steven was invited to become a patron of the UK based charity Raptor Rescue. Raptor Rescue has evolved into the UK's foremost organization dedicated to ensuring all sick and injured Birds of Prey are cared for by suitably qualified people and wherever possible released back into the wild. He also works with Turbary Woods in Lancashire, (a rehabilitation centre) who rehabilitate not just Birds of Prey, but any birds that may need rescuing. By donating prints, and advertising Turbary Woods through his website and exhibitions, Steven makes the public aware of the centre's existence.
As described by Steven, "Painting is my life. For inspiration I like to walk in woodland early in the morning when no-one else is around. I love the different seasons and the feelings and sights they bring. By painting wildlife and nature I hope to make people more aware of its existence, and give the viewer a rare chance to appreciate in detail all the beautiful species in our countryside I hope my work evokes pleasant memories or associations of your past experiences of the natural world which surrounds us."
Steven has a real passion for British birds, the subject matter for which he is renowned. He has used a variety of painting media - acrylics, gouache and the occasional pencil drawing, but has finally settled upon oils, which allow him to attain vibrancy in colour and texture. Steven is known for the meticulous attention to detail in his paintings. His works can be found in many private collections worldwide, including in the UK, Europe, South Africa, and especially North America.
In recent times Steven has decided to push the boundaries as an artist, and as a result is intending to paint stylish pieces that incorporate birds and animals within grand and elaborate settings. The first of this new series of works will feature a collection of Peacocks inspired from visiting Castle Howard in his native North Yorkshire, and intends to place them within areas of this beautiful setting.  As well as these new ideas Steven is also intending to expand his repertoire beyond just wildlife, not wanting to be "pigeon holed" into just being a wildlife artist Steven does landscapes and is hoping to portray everyday scenes, still life, portraits and whatever inspires him to pick up his brushes.
In additiobn to being a signature member of The Artists for Conservation, he is also a member of the Marwell International Wildlife Art Society, which also promotes conservation of wildlife through art.
