Fuz Caforio

AFC Conservation Artist of the Month for February, 2006

Fuz has devoted the last decade of his career to the study of large cats, refining technique and style to capture these magnificent felines on canvas. The exquisite detail and life-like quality of his art comes from painstaking research. Much time is spent in the wild bush and at breeding research stations collecting the necessary reference before he goes into the studio to paint. In the picture on his biography page, Fuz is posing with "Kishu", the black leopard, at the Florida Wildlife Expo.
Through his artwork, Fuz has helped to raise funds for many non-governmental conservation organisations. These include: The WWF, The Endangered Wildlife Trust, The Honorary Rangers of South Africa, DeWildt Cheetah Research, Dr. Jane Goodall, The Endangered Species Protection Unit, Birdlife South Africa and the Born Free Foundation.
As Fuz has put it, "Wildlife has given me so much more than I could ever repay, so my commitment to conservation causes is an obligation I take quite seriously. The DeWildt Cheetah Research Center lies closest to my heart and Anne Van Dyk, a personal friend, has through her example, taught me about true commitment- she's an inspiration!" The cats dominate Fuz's paintings and the emphasis is placed on accurate portrayal of pose and expression. For the last few years, Fuz has been exploring the aspect of felines in movement attempting to capture their fluidity, grace and strength on canvas. This new direction has been well received by friends and collectors.
It is inspiring to see an artist use his talent to draw attention to certain endangered species and at the same time use that artwork to help many conservation organizations protect these creatures.
