Internationally renowned marine artist, Guy Harvey, receives AFC’s 2011 Conservation Award

We are extremely pleased, on behalf of Artists For Conservation, to announce this year's recipient of the Simon Combes Conservation award. AFC Member,Guy Harvey, was chosen for a lifetime of extraordinary support of conservation through artistic excellence. He joins the likes of David Shepherd and Robert Bateman.

"The great significance in receiving this year's Simon Combes Conservation Award is being included among other artists whose work I have greatly admired over many years," says Guy. "We are living in times when artists can make important statements about the condition and over-exploitation of the natural world around us."

Harvey explains that he has embraced the opportunity in collaboration with other artists and scientists to spread the word concerning the increased need for conservation of both terrestrial and marine wildlife. "It is our collective responsibility to conserve the marine environment and maintain the biodiversity of the planet."

A passionate and effective ambassador for the oceans, and as one of the world's best known and most successful advocates in marine conservation, Harvey will receive the award in person at an award ceremony on November 5, during the opening weekend of the 2011 Artists for Conservation Festival at Grouse Mountain, North Vancouver, Canada.

He will also be recognized during the Artists for Conservation Festival Gala in front of a VIP crowd on November 4, 2011. The actual award is an inscribed bronze sculpture created by AFC member Peter Gray of South Africa.

Harvey is a unique blend of artist, scientist, diver, angler, conservationist, and explorer, fiercely devoted to his family and his love of the sea. Growing up in Jamaica, Guy spent many hours fishing and diving with his father along the Island's south coast. He was obsessed with marine life and began drawing pictures of the many different fish he observed.

His natural gift to recreate the underwater realm has propelled him from Professor of Marine Biology to a wildlife artist and photographer. Over the years, Harvey has received numerous awards and accolades for his significant contributions through angling achievements, literature, the arts, science, education, communication, and administration of fishery resources.
