AFC is proud to announce two new awards, each in memory of Pollyanna Pickering and John Seerey-Lester - two prominent AFC members and artistic legends who recently passed.
The Pollyanna Pickering Award
This award will be presented to an artist exhibiting in AFC’s annual exhibit, for their artistic representation of an endangered species (from IUCN Red List). The award will be administered and selected in collaboration with Anna-Louise Pickering - Pollyanna's daughter and life-long travelling companion. A donation to one of Pollyanna's preferred conservation causes will be made in honor of the year's winner by the Pollyanna Pickering Foundation.
The first winner of this award is Douglass Lockyer, for his painting "Tim - Last of the Great Tuskers".
The John Seerey-Lester Award
The John Seerey-Lester Award will be presented to an artist exhibiting in AFC’s annual exhibit, for their outstanding artistic representation of human-wildlife interaction, including depiction of wildlife with either humans, or human-influenced environment. The award will be administered and selected in collaboration with prominent AFC Signature Member, Combes Award recipient and John's widow and long-time artistic partner, Suzie Seerey-Lester.
The first winner of this award is Luke Raffin, for his painting "Hanging Out".
Both winning artworks can be seen in AFC's 2021 Virtual Exhibit.
Pollyanna and John (jointly with Suzie) were previously bestowed with AFC's highest honor - the Simon Combes Conservation Award. Both awards will be formally announced at AFC's upcoming awards ceremony, on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona. During the ceremony, AFC member, Anne London - will also be presented with the Combes Award. Anne's award was announced in 2020 prior to the pandemic.
In addition, AFC will also be recognizing two other award winners, with the Western Art Collector Magazine Editor's Choice Award and the Arabella Magazine Editor's Choice Award. Winners to be announced closer to the awards ceremony.
