Hands
When I visited Sydney's Taronga zoo to take some of my reference photos, I saw two relaxed gorillas sitting together, a father and his son. When I got home, I started drawing both of them together in pastel as I had intended. After adding a few more strokes to the drawing, I stopped. I looked at my reference photo once again - something grabbed my attention. It was the hands of the father gorilla, the way they gently folded across his body in such a tender way. I chose to focus only on the hands of the father gorilla in my final composition because the pose of his hands was speaking to me. I started again in scratchboard.
