TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT

Is a painting of a American Black Bear that captures a special moment in time when man meets the beast. It wasn't the subject itself, rather the composition that needed to work, the aim being to bring the viewer face to face with the bear. Instead of a frightening experience with an aggressive preditor as a wildlife artist I wanted to create the element of surprise.

An image of the bear with a background didn't have a strong enough impact, neither did a full portrait of the bear's head. However, by cropping the image and turning the bear's head slightly away from the viewer, I achieved what I was looking for, in effect a bear that wasn't intimidating or aggressive but one that still retained the strength and power that is the American Black Bear.

ABOUT THE SPECIES

The American Black Bear or Baribal (Ursus americanus) is a medium size bear with females being smaller in size and weight than the male of the species. It's geographic range covers most of North America and Alaska, Canada except the extreme north and south into the Mexican mountain ranges. They can be found in forests with thick undergrowth and scrubland, they are primarily vegetarian with a diet which also includes insects, small mammals and carrion. Like most bears they can be aggresive and easily provocted, especially if protecting young or when threatened.
