THE THINKER

During a research visit to a popular zoo I found myself in front of the gorilla enclosure. Thankfully, and quite by chance I had picked a quiet early morning with few visitors the ideal situation to photographs of wild animals. The apes were relaxing and I spotted a silverback sitting alone and instantly Auguste Rodin came to mind, here in front of me was a large majestic male mirroring the artists famous bronze sculpture. What luck I thought as I quickly took as many shots as I could manage before the animal eventually moved. That was it I had achieved the perfect animal study and an instant composition, in fact it became my interpetation of Rodin's famous painting - The Thinker.

ABOUT THE SPECIES

The Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) may well be the smallest subspecies of gorilla but nevertheless is a large primate with exceptional strength. They are quite imposing animals with coarse black hair covering their entire body except for the face, ears, hands and feet. As males grow into adulthood the hair on their back and rump take on a grey silver coloration, the reason why they are known as silverbacks. The western lowland gorilla's range includes Central African Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. It inhabits montane, primary and secondary forest and will also known to frequant abandoned farm land and riverine forests. As herbivors these gorillas eat roots, shoots, fruit, wild celery, tree bark and pulp. They live in groups containing one or more males, normally related, and number of females and their young with the dominant silverback protecting the group. The species is classified by the IUCN as Critically Endangered.
