AT PEACE WITH HIS WORLD

A painting featuring a young Bengal Tiger, probably a male relaxing below the roots of a banyan tree that support the ruins of an ancient palace gateway within India's famous Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve. Although the tiger may appear to be asleep in actual fact it is very much aware of it's surroundings and therefore quite capable of springing into action at the slightest sound. Even at this young age it's a formidable foe for any unsuspecting visitor and a predator to be avoided.

ABOUT THE SPECIES

The Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris) is India's national emblem and one of six remaining sub-species of tiger and the second largest tiger behind the Amur or Siberian species. This beautifully marked cat primarily inhabits the Indian sub-continent and is also found in small numbers throughout areas of Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and into the southern China. Also known as the Indian tiger it was extensively hunted especially during the eighteenth and nineteenth century. With the arrival of the Europeans the sport of shooting tigers became a symbol of prestige amongst the high ranked military and government officials and the Maharajas of India. For the tiger it almost spelled the end of these magnificent creatures and as recently as 1970 it was still legal to hunt  them and export skins. In 1972 the species became a protected animal and at about the same time Project Tiger was formed and resulted in the development of 23 national parks devoted specifically to save the tiger. For various reasons tiger numbers have fluctuated over the years and today numbers are still extremely low with the species listed by the IUCN as Endangered.
