MISTY MORNING

This beautifully marked bird and equally spectacular setting made for a remarkable composition one that was a real joy to paint. Rather than a portrait of the subject I soon realized that a bird perched up in the rainforest canopy would have the dramatic impact I needed to showcase this extremely colorful member of the parrot family, the scarlet macaw. The composition was the key where a balance between the macaw and the lush canopy foliage was of equally importance, neither had to dominate. I managed achieved this by allowing the viewer to look through the various plants and onto the subject perched on a well defined branch. By creating a heavily clouded rainforest background with a few macaws flying below gave the picture it's three dimensional look. Thus I achieved the painting "Misty Morning".

ABOUT THE SPECIES

The Scarlet macaw (Ara macao) is a large red, yellow and blue parrot, a member of a large group of neotropical parrots called macaws. Native to humid evergreen forests of central and south America these exotic birds range from the extreme South-Eastern Mexico to Amazonian Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela and Brazil. These birds have a diet that mostly comprises of friuts, nuts and seed, they also frequent river banks where they acquire minerials from the sand. Once established the male and female, or cock and hen continue a lifelong partnership where on average two to three white eggs are layed each year with the young birds leaving the nest after their first year. Although in some areas of it's range the scarlet macaw is considered a threatened species, however over all the population is good and therefore classified as of Least Concern by the IUCN.
