Frozen Morning
This scene is from Riding Mountain National Park, one of my favourite places to visit. There was a dense fog the night before that left a thick frost on everything the next morning. The landscape was quiet and frozen with very few sounds but those coming from the birds that stay for the harsh winter. The Pileated Woodpecker is large, about the size of a crow, and the bright red cap on its head is a contrast in this black and white landscape. They are loud birds and both their calls and heavy chopping into trees can be heard echoing through the forest. Not too often have I seen so much forest frozen under a frost like this, but it was surely a delight to see.
