Across the Valley
Being in the Yukon and seeing the large valleys bordered by the massive mountains of Kluane National Park was an amazing sight. The colours of the landscape were varied and rich, and the permanent snow-covered mountains framed the expanse of trees and gave the land a sense of scale. A number of times the sound of a pair of trumpeter swans would get my attention and after hearing their calls, it's apparent where they get their name. The large white birds would contrast the land like the patches of snow left over from the winter, their necks stained a light rusty colour from feeding in the shallow lakes. The largest waterfowl species in North America, they are fantastic to watch as they fly off over the valleys into the distance.
