Sticking your neck out.
This little fellow was making his way across the boards of a friend's back porch on Hilton Head Island, SC when I encountered him. He's a carnivorous and invasive little guy called a Rosy Wolfsnail, but that didn't mean that I couldn't use him as the subject matter for a painting study on light.
Note that color is not the focus here, my challenge was to create the illusion of light dancing through and around the shell and creating the transparent gelatinous texture of his head and neck. Direct, indirect, shadow, and reflected light are also represented here.
