I have long been fascinated by the “lowly” Eastern Box Turtle which was ubiquitous across Montgomery County where I ran barefoot in the summers as a young boy. It seemed that they were always with me; discovered in the woods, observed for a short while in a sandbox, or keeping me company as a tempura painted sun bleached shell on my bedroom shelf. When I started painting wildlife I went back and took a new look at my old friend and found more beauty than I ever remembered as a child, when they were just "box turtles." Perhaps now I appreciate things more.
