The black rhinoceros is a critically endangered species overall with three subspecies declared extinct within the last 165 years. Their numbers have fallen from several hundred thousand in 1900 to less than 4500 today. So often this magnificent animal is portrayed in a scarred, dusty and unflattering appearance. My intention here was simply to highlight his magnificence.
You can see how I had a bit of fun with composition, creating a column of clouds to the right and a horizon line with the grass to box the viewer's eye towards the center of the piece. The cattle egrets were added to lend balance to the overall composition.
