Legend of the Falls
This was one of my earlier paintings, which I did as part of a group of animals that would have been encountered by Lewis and Clark on their expedition in 1804. Until just a few weeks ago, it was hanging on loan as part of a display in a public library. I finally decided to make it available for sale.
“Legends of the Falls” is one of my wife’s least favorite paintings because of the bloody visceral nature of the scene. But I painted it precisely that way. The bloody salmon at the end of his life, the open flesh wound on the bear from a recent fight over food, the over the shoulder glance for competitors and the tumultuous water all remind us that nature is struggle.
Yet, despite it’s unpleasantness, struggle is essential in keeping our natural world in balance and an integral and essential part of our lives. Struggle, I believe, is all part of the beauty of nature.
