The Hand of Jesus
Oil on panel
Psalm 56:8
You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book?

The idea for this painting was birthed some time in 2014.
The bottle is a reproduction of a tear bottle that would have existed at the time Jesus walked on earth. The tear bottle was a gift to me from my dear friend and sister in The Lord, Marie, who knew what grief I was going through at that time. In biblical times mourners caught their tears in these bottles as symbols of the great love they had for those they lost. She purchased the tear bottles, one for me and one for herself as a loving contribution to the painting.
Originally I finished the piece with gnarled scars in the wrist of our Lord and only two tears... Tears are perfect spheres as all ‘drops’ are otherwise we would not have rainbows. However it never really felt like it was fully communicating His sacrifice. So I took it off my website and refrained from showing it publicly for several years.
Ten years later, early in 2024 I began to pray about the purpose for this painting. The Hand needed something more so I was compelled to rework the scar into a harsh piercing directly though His wrist.. The beam of gold light shining from His resurrected pierced wrist, represented heaven,  and a third tear were the final touches.
The idea behind the keeping of “tears in a bottle” is remembrance. In this Psalm David is expressing a deep trust in God—God will remember his sorrow and tears and will not forget about him. God is a tender-hearted Father to us, a God who feels with us and weeps with us (Exodus 3:7; John 11:33–35).
Our tears are not futile, every tear we shed has meaning to Him. He remembers our sorrows and in the end, He will share His joy with us when “‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:4).
I dedicate the completion of this painting to my dear Sister in the Lord, Marie, who was with me at the beginning of this painting and who was, unbeknownst to me (but known to God), the catalyst for its completion and its forever home with her beloved Max.
Marie was the gift to me from heaven back in 1984, who introduced me to the Jesus I knew then and the Jesus I know now. I look forward to the day when through faith in Christ, the Way, the Truth and the Life... I will join Marie in heaven, singing praises to our King, in her own words...”Ascended into heaven, risen from the grave, at the right hand of the Father He is worthy to be praised. All because of Jesus I can walk in victory, all the way to heaven where my Father waits for me”!
