WILD AND FREE
WILD AND FREE by Chris Navarro H-12.5’’L- 39’’ W- 5’’ bronze sculpture. Captures the power, movement, and spirit of a wild horse herd running freely across the open prairie. It is a study of freedom, leadership, family, and the instinctive order of the wild.
At the front of the herd, the mares lead the way. In a wild horse band, the mares determine the direction of travel, choosing the safest and most suitable path for the herd. Their position at the front represents wisdom, instinct, and leadership, the experience of knowing where to go and when it is time to move.
Behind them runs the herd stallion. Rather than leading from the front, he remains at the rear, watching over his mares and young. His role is one of protection, strength, and vigilance. He is constantly aware of what is happening behind the herd and prepared to defend it from danger.
Among the powerful mares is a young colt—the newest generation of the herd. The colt represents hope, continuity, and the future. Surrounded by the strength of the adults, he is carried forward by the wisdom of the mares and protected by the stallion.
The horses appear to run across a narrow, sweeping section of prairie that rises beneath them like a wave, this unusual composition heightens the sense of movement and momentum. The sculpture's horizontal design draws the viewer's eye from one horse to the next, creating a continuous rhythm of pounding hooves, flowing manes, and powerful bodies. Every horse has a role, yet together they become one living force.
