THE STRONG SURVIVE
THE STRONG SURVIVE By Chris Navarro H- 16’’ L – 34’’ W -8’’
THE STRONG SURVIVE captures one of nature’s most powerful moments, the relentless pursuit of a mature bull elk by two wolves during the first snowfall of autumn.
The elk runs with determination, his massive antlers rising above the storm, while the wolves pursue close behind. Yet this is more than predator and prey. The wolves make the elk stronger, and the elk makes the wolves stronger. The elk must remain alert, powerful, and fast, while the wolves rely on endurance, intelligence, teamwork, and persistence.
This is nature’s balance. Each challenges the other to become stronger. For me, THE STRONG SURVIVE is also a metaphor for life. We all face challenges, adversity, uncertainty, and circumstances beyond our control. We may not choose the challenges that come our way, but they can make us stronger. Strength isn’t created by an easy life. Strength is revealed through adversity.
The first snow represents change, uncertainty, and the coming of a harsher season. The flecks of snow across the bronze freeze this moment in time, making the storm part of the sculpture. The bull’s magnificent antlers symbolize strength, maturity, experience, and the battles he has survived. Yet even the strongest cannot stop moving forward. And neither can we. The elk needs the challenge of the wolves. The wolves need the challenge of the elk. Their struggle represents the forces that test us, build our character, and develop resilience. The wolves pursue. The elk runs. The snow falls. And life continues. The strong survive—but it is the struggle that makes them strong. – Chris Navarro
